Identify which components are sterile and which contact the drug or patient. “Medical grade” and “sterile” need a defined scope and supporting evidence.
Separate the housing from the drug-contact system
A plastic injection pen housing and the primary drug container have different functions and evidence requirements. A metal injection pen body does not establish drug compatibility, just as a medical grade material description does not establish finished-product suitability. Start by listing components that contact the drug, the patient or neither. Identify the material specification, supplier and relevant processing conditions for each component. If a claim concerns biocompatibility, extractables, leachables or compatibility, ask which configuration and contact conditions the evidence addresses. Avoid assuming that a supplier’s raw material statement covers the entire device. For a sourcing discussion, use a material and contact matrix to make responsibilities explicit. This helps separate what is already documented from what needs investigation for the intended formulation, use duration and market.
Ask what exactly is sterile
A sterile injection pen claim must state its scope. It may refer to a needle, a filled drug container, a sterile fluid path or another defined part of the presentation. It should not be extended automatically to every surface of an assembled device. Ask how the relevant sterile components are processed, packaged, released and protected through the intended lifecycle. Keep device assembly, drug filling and any sterilization responsibilities separate in the quality agreement. If the proposed process changes, assess whether the existing evidence remains applicable to the materials and configuration. A certificate or cleanroom photograph does not answer all of these questions. The useful procurement outcome is a documented description of the sterile boundary and the evidence supporting it, with unresolved items clearly identified before the commercial claim is published.

Common questions
Does medical grade mean the complete pen is sterile?
No. Material suitability and sterility are separate claims, each requiring a defined scope and evidence.
