FDA, CE and ISO: checking supplier claims

Verify each claim against the exact legal entity, device and market. A quality certificate, establishment registration and product authorization are different forms of evidence.

Verify each claim against the exact legal entity, device and market. A quality certificate, establishment registration and product authorization are different forms of evidence.

Ask for the document behind the claim

A search for an fda injection pen or ce marked injection pen should lead to a document review, not a badge count. Ask for the legal manufacturer, exact product identifier, claimed status and the relevant reference or document. Establishment registration, a quality management certificate and permission to market a particular product are not interchangeable. For CE marking, the European Commission describes manufacturer responsibilities including conformity assessment, technical documentation and the declaration of conformity. The applicable route depends on the product and its circumstances. Buyers should have a qualified regulatory lead review the proposed market and presentation. This website does not claim FDA approval, CE marking or ISO certification for an unspecified product. Evidence should be evaluated for the exact configuration before such a claim is used commercially.

Check scope, validity and configuration changes

A document review should confirm the issuing organization, named entity, scope, dates and model coverage. Check whether the actual manufacturing location and proposed supply arrangement match the documents. If a supplier offers private labeling, clarify who becomes responsible for the marketed product and which documents need to reflect that arrangement. A technical standard such as ISO 11608 concerns a different question from a quality management system standard such as ISO 13485. Neither should be used as a vague all-purpose endorsement. Record which evidence has been reviewed and which questions remain open, then revisit the record after meaningful design or supply changes. This approach helps procurement avoid both overclaiming and rejecting useful evidence merely because different documents serve different purposes. The goal is a traceable, market-specific decision.

Parameters & review checklist

  • Legal entity and manufacturing location
  • Exact device and document scope
  • Current validity and status
  • Private-label and market responsibilities

Common questions

Does an ISO certificate prove FDA approval?

No. Quality certification and product regulatory status address different questions and must be checked separately.
