Compare equivalent presentations
An injection pen, a prefilled syringe and a vial with a separate syringe represent different preparation and delivery workflows. Comparing only the plastic parts overlooks filling, packaging, labeling and user training. Define the intended dose and use environment first, then map the steps required by each presentation. A pen may include dose selection or dose memory, while a prefilled syringe has a different container and handling sequence. Those differences can be useful in some applications, but they do not prove a clinical benefit for every medicine or population. Ask for evidence tied to the proposed configuration. For sourcing, keep the device-only quotation separate from the price of a filled, released product, and compare the same forecast, quality responsibilities and distribution assumptions across every candidate presentation.
Use a decision matrix instead of a universal ranking
A practical decision matrix records the users, preparation steps, dose flexibility, container requirements and evidence gaps for each option. Include people who may need help reading labels or operating the mechanism. Consider the consequence of a wrong product selection, incomplete injection or handling error rather than counting steps alone. The matrix should also identify who owns formulation compatibility, filling validation and the final instructions. If a device is already integrated into an authorized medicine, changing the presentation can introduce a new development and regulatory question. Do not treat a switch as a simple packaging update. For early discussions, ask suppliers to explain both where their platform fits and where it does not. An explicit limitation is more useful than an unsupported claim that one format suits every injectable product.
