Evaluate viscosity, dose volume, needle path and drive mechanism together. A single advertised injection time cannot establish performance across formulations and temperatures.
Define a realistic operating envelope
An autoinjector platform should be discussed using an operating envelope rather than one nominal viscosity value. State the formulation’s relevant characteristics, expected temperature conditions, volume and intended primary container. Include the needle path and the proposed drive mechanism in the same discussion. A delivery time quoted for a demonstration liquid may not represent the actual formulation. Ask the supplier to identify assumptions and what additional testing is needed before an estimate becomes a requirement. For a project brief, separate known measured values from targets or preliminary estimates. That distinction prevents an early commercial conversation from hardening into an unsupported performance claim. If a parameter is not yet available, assign an owner and a decision date so the platform choice can be revisited when evidence becomes available.
Consider the user’s experience of completion
Delivery time is also a usability question. The intended user needs to understand when delivery starts, when it is complete and what to do if the sequence is interrupted. A design that performs on a test fixture may still create confusion during realistic handling. Review audible, visual or tactile feedback as part of the complete sequence. Do not assume that a click always means the full dose has been delivered; the meaning depends on the device design and instructions. Buyers should request the rationale and evidence for completion feedback alongside the mechanism data. For comparisons, record both the technical delivery assumptions and the user tasks. This helps teams identify whether a proposed change to volume, drive force or container may also require a change to training, labeling or usability evaluation.

Common questions
Can one injection time be promised for every formulation?
No. The time depends on the specified formulation and device configuration and needs appropriate verification.
