Choose between disposable and reusable pens by evaluating the full treatment presentation, cartridge handling, service life and supply model. Neither format is universally better.
Compare the lifecycle, not just the unit price
A disposable injection pen is discarded at the end of its specified use life; a reusable injection pen retains the body and uses an intended replacement cartridge. Neither term tells you how many doses a device delivers. A multi-dose prefilled pen can still be disposable. Build a comparison around the complete lifecycle: initial device, cartridges or refills, needles, packaging, user training and disposal. A low housing price can be offset by a more complex filling presentation or support requirement. A reusable body can introduce cartridge replacement and lifetime verification questions that do not apply in the same way to a prefilled format. Ask suppliers to identify what is included in their price and what belongs to another party. Compare proposals only after the scope and forecast assumptions are aligned.
Evaluate handling and replacement boundaries
For reusable platforms, cartridge replacement is a defined task that needs compatible parts and clear instructions. For disposable platforms, end-of-use recognition and correct disposal still need attention. Both formats require appropriate dose identification and protection against foreseeable use errors. A procurement team should therefore review handling with representative users, particularly when vision, dexterity or caregiver support may affect use. Do not assume that fewer parts always produce fewer errors; test the actual sequence and labeling. An insulin pen must not be shared between people, even if a needle is changed. Reusability describes the device lifecycle for its intended user, not permission for shared clinical use. The final selection should link usability evidence, the supply model and the product-specific instructions to the proposed commercial configuration.

Common questions
Does disposable mean single dose?
No. A disposable prefilled pen may deliver multiple doses before the device is discarded, depending on its labeling.
